Virgil L. McConnell, 92, of Danville, IL, formerly of Covington, IN passed away Sunday afternoon, April 15, 2018.
Virgil was born in Hillsboro, KY on November 28, 1925, the son of Rev. E.E. and Opal McConnell. On August 10, 1947, he and Katherine Lewsader were married at the Covington First Church of Christ by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine and their three children, Phyllis (Dr. Joseph) Fabrizio, Jody (Joseph) Lawrie, and Alan (Elaine) McConnell; four grandchildren, Allen Lance Dougherty, Michael (Megan) McConnell, Katie (Jef) McDonough and Jessica Mayerovitch; step-grandchildren Sara (Dave) Ungari, Carol (Jillion) Fabrizio, Dr. Matthew (Amy) Fabrizio; and four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Edsel, and his sisters, Odell and Elnora.
Virgil graduated from Lawrenceburg, IN. High School. He then entered the military in 1944, serving with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home from Germany, he attended the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. He worked at Olin Matheson for over 30 years. After retiring, he and Katherine traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
Virgil was very active in his church, having served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He was an avid sportsman. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, bocce ball and golf. He also greatly enjoyed camping and playing cards with his many friends, singing around the piano and attending theatrical and musical productions and events. His greatest joy, though, was spending time with his family.
A celebration of his life will be at 11:00 A. M. EDT Friday April 20, 2018 in the First Church of Christ, 615 Fifth Street, Covington, IN., with Pastor Mike Harshman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with military honors by the Army and Veedersburg American Legion. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P. M. EDT Thursday at the church and one hour before services on Friday. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are requested to the First Church of Christ. Shelby Funeral Home is assisting the family.
