Robert Eugene Talbert

Dr Robert Eugene Talbert 87, of Covington, IN, passed away April 4, 2015 in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born April 8, 1927 in Middlefork, Indiana to Luther and Ethel (Johnson) Talbert who preceded him in death.

He married Alice Jo Townsend in Richmond, IN, March 1, 1952. She preceded him in death July 8, 2008. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Talbert.

He will be deeply missed by daughters, Carol Mullins, Olive Branch, MS; Vicki (George) Elmes, Zionsville; Sons, Steve (Melanie) Talbert Covington, John (Gay) Talbert, Indianapolis; Sisters, Ramona (Robert) Cline, Kokomo; Phyllis Simmons, San Luis Obispo, CA; and brother, Jack (Marcia) Talbert, Russiaville, IN.
Also surviving are 11 Grandchildren, Natalie Mullins, Jennifer (Phillip) Perez, Samantha Mullins, Kristen (Tom) Byker, Daniel Elmes, Megan (Jason) Grisez, Stephanie (Jason) Torres, Ben (Sarah) Talbert, Robby Talbert, Allison Talbert, Lauren Talbert, and 4 great grandchildren.

He graduated from Russiaville High School, Russiaville, IN. He attended Indiana University. He then served in the U.S. Navy 1944-1945. Dr. Talbert graduated from Indiana University Medical School in 1953. He finished his internship in Lafayette, IN in 1954. He then joined General Practice with Roberts Clinic, Watseka, IL and was very active in Kiwanis. In 1966 he started his residency in Indianapolis IU Medical Center at which time he specialized in psychiatry. In 1969 Dr. Talbert facilitated the opening of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Mental Health Unit. He then practiced psychiatry in the communities of Danville, IL and Watseka IL until his retirement. He was a member of Covington United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing euchre, mowing, fishing, gardening, and his orchard. A great family tradition was to gather in the fall to make apple cider and mushroom hunting in the spring with his family. He and his wife enjoyed many winters in Florida fishing and spending time with friends.

Services will be at the Covington United Methodist Church Wednesday April 8, 2015 at 1:00 P. M. Visitation will be 10:00 A. M. until time of services at 1:00 P. M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in his honor be made to MAC VAN, Community Action Program Inc of Western Indiana, or the charity of donors choice with envelopes available from Shelby funeral Home.
