Maxine Holycross

June 7, 1922 — June 16, 2018

(Joy) Maxine Holycross, 96, of Covington, Ind., entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior at 11:49 a.m. EDT Saturday, June 16, 2018, at St. Vincent Hospital, Williamsport, Ind.

She was born June 7, 1922, in Sullivan, Ind., the daughter of Jacob and Versa (Hayden) Smith.

She married Lowell R. Holycross on August 18, 1940.

Maxine and Lowell lived in San Diego, Calif., while Lowell served in the Navy during World War II. During their time there, Maxine was employed as an aircraft riveter. After Lowell's tour of duty, they settled in Sullivan, Ind., until 1951. Upon moving to Covington, they owned and operated Holycross Oil Company for 25 years.

As a member of First Assembly of God Church in Covington for more than 65 years, Maxine served in many capacities. She had a heart for the Women's Missionary group, taught Sunday School for many years and was an outstanding musician and singer.

Maxine leaves to cherish her memory her children, Merrill (Larry, deceased) Randles, Jake (Gladys) Holycross, Linda (Roger) Herzog, Lea (Marv) Johnson, Julie (Scott) Powell and Tina (Tim) Biesecker, all of Covington. She also is survived by three sisters of Lafayette, Ind., one brother residing in Davenport, Fla., 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great­ grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell, to whom she was married for nearly 72 years before his death on July 8, 2012. Also deceased are her parents, brother, son-in-law and two great-grandchildren.

Maxine's Christian example, love, and devotion to her family and church will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 22, at First Assembly of God Church, Fifth Street, in Covington. A home-going celebration will commence at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at the church, with Pastor Bob Fairchild officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington.
