Mary Kathryn Young

December 8, 1922 — April 27, 2018

Mary Kathryn Rhodes Young passed this life at 3:25 p.m., Friday, April 27, 2018 at her home in Covington, Indiana. She had been in declining health for the past year.  Mary K. was born at home in Wabash Township south of Covington December 8, 1922 to Samuel Clinton and Kathryn Blanche Coleman Rhodes.  She attended the one-room White School in her early years and graduated from Perrysville High School in 1941.

Mary K. married her soul mate and love of her life, William Elmo Young, on June 8, 1942 in St. Charles, Missouri. They cherished one another and were perfect examples of love and commitment throughout their 68 years together.  Elmo preceded her in death February 25, 2011.

Mary K. was employed by Douglass & Nelson Abstract for approximately 30 years, and retired as a secretary from the Wallace Law Firm.

At 95, she was well known to have a sharp mind and amazing recall for history and events. Throughout her life she maintained a keen interest in current events, politics, history and genealogy.  She had traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad with her husband during their 30 years of retirement together.

Mary K. was a member of the Covington United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Covington Womans Club, Psi Iota Xi sorority, Wabash Chapel Ladies Aid, and a 50-year member of OES, having held leadership roles in those organizations throughout her life.

She was the matriarch of her family whom she loved dearly and who will miss her greatly.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, a sister, Lucile (Rex) Crowder, a brother, Merle Rhodes, and an infant daughter, Judy Lee. Survivors include three daughters, Christine Ann Holmes, Crystal Sue Mitchell (Mark Peek), and Jill Kay (Kevin) Abernathy, all of Covington; four grandsons, Roger (Tina) Holmes, Michael (Dawn) Holmes, Zachary (Jennifer) Taylor and Aaron (Lyndsay) Abernathy; one granddaughter, Katie (Craig) Miller; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Treca Dunham, Virginia Allen, and Joan Frank; a brother-in-law William (Ruth) Young; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The family wishes to extend thanks to special neighbors and friends, Richard and Paula Partezana, for their support and kindness through the years, and especially for their daily visits and prayers these past few months. Special thanks, also, to caregiver, Jeannie Hines, hospice nurse, Pandora Figley, and the entire support staff of Great Lakes Caring Home Health Hospice.

The funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M. EDT Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Covington United Methodist Church, 419 Washington Street, with Ret. Navy Chaplain Dennis Young and Chase Tibbs officiating. Visitation prior to services from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. EDT.  Burial in Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date.
