Dr. Leonard Roy Orr II, 62 of Covington died unexpectedly at 5:06 P. M. Monday April 4, 2016. He was born in Goffstown, NH the son of Roy Rex and Mary Virginia Ginger (Leland) Orr.
Leonard was a resident of Covington most of his life and a 1971 graduate of Covington High School. He lettered all four year in three sports and was a top athlete at Covington High School and the University of Denver. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Denver in 1975 and was a four year varsity basketball player. He earned a Masters of Science in Education from Northwest Missouri State in 1978; Secondary Administration and Supervision degree from Indiana State University in 1988; an Educational Specialist Degree from Indiana State University in 2004; and a Doctor of Philosophy, College of Education, Indiana State University in 2010.
Leonard married Marsha McDonald Holt on July 17, 2010 in Lake Forest, llinois and she survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Jennifer (Addison) Eddins of Standardsville, VA; Sarah (Michael) Burnett of Paragon, IN; Katie (Clint) Phelps of St. Petersburg, FL; Ashley (Troy) Goble of Oakwood, IL; a brother Randy (Nancy) Orr of Covington, IN; five sisters, Bonnie (Robert) Wright of Covington, IN; Diane Hughes of Perrysville, IN; Joanne Orr (Danny Milhon) of Coatsville, IN; Susan (Joe) Henderson of Covington, IN; Karen Orr (Larry Fisher) of Monticello, IN; and eight grandchildren. His father and a brother Jeffrey preceded him in death.
His professional experiences included Teacher/Coach South Newton Jr. /Sr. High School 1975-1977; Teacher/Coach , Northwest Missouri State University 1977-1981; Sales, Federal Savings and Loan 1985-1987; Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Covington High School in 1987-1989; Principal at Covington Middle School 1989-2004; Superintendent, Southwest Parke Community Schools 2004 to present.
Dr. Orrs memberships included: Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents; Indiana Association of School Business Officials; Indiana School Boards Association; Executive Board of the West Central Indiana Educational Service Center; Executive Board of the Educational Service Center Risk Funding Trust; Hillsboro United Methodist Church, Partnership of Parke County Board of Directors; Parke County Learning Center Board; West Central Indiana Cooperative; Covered Bridge Special Education Cooperative; North Central Association; and Rockville Rotary Club.
Dr. Orr earned many honors including I-Star Indiana State Principal of the Year 2000; IAESP District 4 Principal of the Year 1992; Texas State Junior College Coach of the Year 1984. He enjoyed playing golf and was Rivercrest League Champion for many years. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time on the beach with family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A. M. EDT Saturday April 9, 2016 in the Covington United Methodist Church with Rev. Frank Sablan officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 P. M.
