Jon Emshwiller

December 19, 1940 — January 2, 2023

Jon A. Emshwiller 12/19/1940 – 1/2/2023

Jon Emshwiller was born in Bluffton, Indiana December 19, 1940 to Tom and Jean (Hammond) Emshwiller. In 1945 they moved to Covington, Indiana where Jon would graduate from Covington High School in 1959. Jon was active in the band and choir (bringing home several medals from music competitions) and was also in many plays and musicals, as well different sports in high school. Jon was a member of the Covington First UMC and sang in the choir, as well as being active in the UMYF.  He was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

Jon went to the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1960. He worked for funeral homes in three towns in Indiana for several years. Following his time in the funeral business, Jon worked for Sears & Roebuck, followed by a twenty-five year tenure at John Hancock Mutual Services until his retirement.

Jon served his country and was a member of the Army National Guard, with the earned rank of Staff-Sergeant.

Jon met Virginia (Blair) Emshwiller and they were married in November 1965.  They had two sons, Jon (a.k.a. Jack) (Mary) and Michael (Brent Ruby). His wife Virginia passed away in 1998 following a long illness. Then he married Joyce Gill-Emshwiller in 1999. Joyce had one son, Jonathon, from her previous marriage. Joyce passed away in 2019 following a short bout with cancer, and Jon moved to Michigan to live with his son and son-in-law.

When Jon moved to Michigan, he enjoyed seeing his sons and family with visits to Indiana and their visits to Michigan, and the many neighbors that dropped in to say hello.  Jon was a member of Faith Macomb UMC, and was active in Sunday School, the Lunch outings and other fun times.  He was a voracious reader (he loved the 3 daily newspapers, and plentiful supply of magazines) and continued this as he moved to the Village of East Harbor. While at the Village, Jon was a busy man, always seen with a smile, loved seeing anyone and everyone.  He especially loved wandering around in his wheelchair to see what was happening in different areas of the building – including popping in on staff meetings to see the nurses and caregivers. Even though he suffered from vascular dementia, he didn’t let it slow him down. Jon passed away quietly on the afternoon of January 2, 2023.

Jon is survived by his sons: Jack (Mary), Michael (Brent) and Jonathon, sister Jane (Paul) Moore, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces as well as many friends.

Jon was predeceased by his parents Tom and Jean, sister Joan Cline, his first wife Virginia, and second wife Joyce.

Per Jon’s wishes, anyone wishing to make a memorial in his honor may be made to his church Faith Macomb UMC. The address is: Faith Macomb UMC, 56370 Fairchild Road,  Macomb, MI 48042
