John Thomas Myers, 87, of Covington died at 10:40 A. M. Tuesday January 27, 2015 at his home. He was born February 8, 1927 in Covington the son of Warren E. and Myra E. Wisher Myers.
He was a member of the 1945 Regional Championship basketball team and was a 1945 graduate of Covington High School. He was a 1951 graduate of Indiana State University. He was an Army veteran, retiring as a Major. He was cashier and trust officer at the Fountain Trust Company from 1952 to 1966.
John was Congressman from the Indiana 7th District from 1966 to 1996 and a farmer all of his life. His memberships include: Church of the Holy Trinity, life member of the American Legion, VFW, and 50 year member of Fountain Lodge #60 F. & A. M., a 33 degree member of Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, Wabash Valley Association, Reserve Officers Association, Sigma Pi, and Association of Former Members of Congress.
John married Carol V. Carruthers May 30, 1953 at Danville, IL and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Ann Myers (Rick Kellam) of Marion, IN, Lori Jan Kerns (Brian) of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Justin Kerns, Austin Kerns, Elizabeth Kerns, Shannon Kerns, Kristy Unton, Aaron Kellam, Alex Kellam, several nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister Marcia Hanley and a brother Wisher Myers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. Friday at the Covington United Methodist Church. Masonic services at 5:45 P. M. Friday. Funeral services will be at Covington United Methodist Church Saturday January 31, 2015 at 2:00 P. M. with Father Geoffrey Scanlon officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials requested to Covington Community Foundation or I U Simon Cancer Center with envelopes available at the church.
