Gary E. Chilcote, of Covington, fought the fight, but lost the battle on Thursday May 26, 2011 after a month long illness. Gary had been ill the past several years but recently found a will and determination like no other. Family meant everything to him. His daughters and son-in-laws, Karen (Eric) Roberts and Hillary (Jeff) Gayler were his pride and joy, but his 5 grandchildren were his life. MaKenzie, Makayla and Gage Gayler, Gabby and Sophia Roberts represented the very air he breathed and that air was precious to him. Gary is survived by his wife of 28 years, Lesley (Taylor) Chilcote and his couch companions, Bella and Brutus Hayes. Gary is also survived by two brothers Herb (Carolyn) Chilcote of Tuscan, AZ as well as Thad (Kim) Chilcote of Columbus, OH and a sister Nancy (Harry) Bieber of Coshocton, OH.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Mary (Spring) Chilcote who gave him life April 30, 1936 and a son Richard Lee (Rocky) Knight who filled his heart with so much love, only to be taken too soon.
Gary came to the Covington area as a young man, married Linda Woodrow on August 25, 1957 and later divorced. He was in the U.S. Army Reserves and continued to farm for the next 43 years, retiring in 1990 then working as a crop adjustor and most recently as the proprietor of the Northside Pub which ironically opened its doors fifteen years ago on May 26, 1996 . Gary was a people person. You might walk through the door a stranger, but more often than not, you would leave as a friend, and the friendships made were many. The stories told were countless, and the memories made were priceless. Because of these friendships, I would ask that you honor my husband in a Celebration of his Life on Saturday, June 4th at Rivercrest Golf Course, Covington IN, from 5-9 pm and share these moments with our family as a lasting legacy to Gary. We would also ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gary Chilcote Legacy Fund. Gary loved his community and the residents in it and over the past 15 years made every effort to give to those in need. As a family we would like to keep that tradition going and giving strong. Shelby Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences to the family: www.shelbyfuneralhome.com
