Fred Elmer Stoup

June 24, 1929 — November 28, 2011

Covington, IN. Fred E. Stoup, 82, a lifetime resident of the Covington area, died at 11:01 a.m. Monday November 28, 2011, at Provena United Samaritan Medical Center. He was born June 24, 1929 in Fountain County, Indiana to Frank and Vivian (Stout) Stoup. Fred married Barbara Holycross July 1, 1950 at Danville, IL. and she survives.

Fred was a graduate of Perrysville High School and Valedictorian of the class of 1947. He was a member of Perrysville Lions Club and Coal Branch Church. He was a pattern maker for Tilton Pattern, for many years, retiring in 1991.


Fred was an avid Purdue sports fan and devoted to his family. One of the highlights of his life was following the North Vermillion Lady Falcon basketball team as they won the 2002 Indiana Class A State Basketball tournament and 2003 Class A runner-up. His granddaughter, Kayla Hinkle was part of the starting five on those teams and he was so proud of her accomplishments.

Surviving with his wife is one son, Dwight (Paula) Stoup of Phoenix, AZ., one daughter, Rhonda (Ken Cruiser) Gentrup of Covington; brother, John Stoup of Covington and sister, Louise Downey of Henderson, TN. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Donny (Ramona) Gill, Eric (Teresa) Stoup, Kayla Hinkle and two great-grandchildren, Eli and Iris Gill. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. (EST) Thursday December 1, 2011 at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington. Funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday December 2, 2011 also at Shelby Funeral Home, with Paul Zeibert and Tracy Taulman officiating. Interment to follow at Lower Mound Cemetery.
