Frances B. Fleming Matthews, 88, left her earthly home in the early morning hours of Nov. 24, 2014. She joins her father, Arthur S. Fleming , mother Nellie A. Fleming, and husband Burton N. Matthews who had gone on before her.
Frances was born on April 20, 1926 in Covington, Indiana. She was a 1944 graduate of Covington High School where she was a cheerleader and played drums in the band. She attended Indiana State University to pursue a career in education.
She married WWII veteran Burton Nathaniel Matthews at the First Presbyterian Church in Covington on July 25, 1948.
Fran was a talented and creative woman who used her gifts in her life as a teacher at Cayuga, caterer, real estate agent, and home maker. She spent many years helping her children and grandchildren in 4-H, building floats, decorating for proms, and other artistic projects.
Her memberships included: Business Professional Women, First Church of Christ Covington, and Tri Kappa. Fran was active in the local Democratic Party and served as the County Chairman.
She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering for her brother Pete Fleming through his high school years and later for her grandchildren through their successful sports and music careers.
Those she leaves behind are sad to lose her but are thankful she is no longer suffering. They include daughter Nancy (Herb) King of Rockville, IN, son Michael Matthews of Champaign, IL. Grandchildren: Matthew King, Adrian, MI, Molly King, Springfield, IL, and Ashley (Patrick) Smith, Rockville, IN with great-grandchildren Rylee and Joseph.
Also surviving are sister Rosemary (Richard) Klage, Covington, IN, brother Carl Pete Fleming, Danville, IL, nieces and nephews Barbara (Jack) Macy, Covington, IN, Hillary Macy, Lafayette, IN, and Ryan (Megan) Ellmore (with children Caleb, Neil, and Seth) of Covington and Scott Fleming, Danville, IL.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at 2 pm at Shelby Funeral Home with Don Hatfield officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2 pm prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Western Indiana Community Foundation.
