Douglas Francis Shelby, 69, Covington, Indiana died suddenly Tuesday September 3, 2024 at his home in Veedersburg. He fought heart problems for the past three years. He was born October 4, 1954 at Danville, IL the son of Robert B and Helen Frances (Moudy) Shelby.

Doug was a life resident of Covington and graduated from Covington High school with the class of 1972. He attended Northwood University at West Baden and Purdue University. He graduated from Mid-America College of Funeral Service in 1986. He received his Funeral Director License in Indiana and Illinois in 1986. He was a funeral director with Shelby Funeral Home for thirty-seven years and formerly operated Parham Funeral Home in Veedersburg.

Doug was Fountain County Coroner eight years and a deputy for eight years. He assisted his coroner friend with the recovery of the victims at the crash of the American Eagle at Roselawn on October 31, 1994. He was a former EMT with the funeral home and Fountain County Ambulance Service.

His memberships include: Fountain Masonic Lodge #60 F&AM for forty-eight years, Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Covington United Methodist Church, Indiana Funeral Directors Association, vice president of Independent Funeral Directors of Indiana, Vermilion County Funeral Directors Association, and a former member of Indiana Coroners Association.

Doug was an avid fan of the Indianapolis 500 and other IMS races, Daytona, and Grand Prix. In May you knew where to find Doug – at the Speedway. He enjoyed skeet shooting for many years. Doug enjoyed family gatherings and being with his cousins, having been with the family over the Labor Day weekend. 

Doug is survived by his father Robert B “Bob” Shelby of Covington, brother Robert Irvin “Rob” Shelby of San Antonio, TX; a nephew William Robert Shelby of Universal City, TX; uncle Donald R and Martha Shelby of West Lafayette, IN; aunt Viriginia Bennett of Richardson, TX; aunt Emma Lou and Richard Davis of Vancouver, WA; aunt Edna Belle Shelby of Indianapolis, IN; nineteen cousins and many friends. His mother Helen Frances Shelby, uncle Richard Shelby, aunt Mary Elizabeth Hoagland, Sister-in-Law Katherine E. Shelby andgrandparents preceded him in death. 

Funeral Services 11:00 A. M. Saturday September 7, 2024 at Shelby & Keller Funeral Home, 622 Third Street, Covington, IN. Pastor Andy Harkleroad will officiate. Doug will be buried next to his mother in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation 5:00 to 8:00 P. M. Friday at the funeral home, with Masonic Services at 8:00 P. M. In lieu of flowers Memorials to Covington Community Foundation for Mount Hope Cemetery Fund or The Robert and Helen Shelby Unrestricted Fund. Condolences to the family: rbshelby@sbcglobal.net
