Byron Day Tate passed away on October 20th at his residence at Carlyle Place in Macon, Georgia. He was born to Byron Day Tate Sr. and Minnie Anna Martha Finn on December 13, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his early years in Chicago and Ludlow KY, graduating from Fenger High School in Chicago. In his teen years, he worked in the family brass foundry. He and his brother Robert were the 4th generation of brass and iron moulders in the Tate family to work in foundries in Chicago IL, Altoona PA, Catoctin Furnace MD and Covington, KY.
Byron enlisted in the US Army in November 14, 1942 and saw action with the 1ST Army in the European Theater under General Omar Bradley. He joined the D-Day invasion force in July 1944 and also saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge. He served in Northern France, the Ardennes in France and Belgium, and in the Rhineland in Germany. He was decorated with one Service Stripe, 3 Overseas Service Bars, an American Campaign Medal, and a European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star. He also received the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He returned to Chicago after discharge and married Mildred Lorraine Diffenderfer on Nov 22, 1950. He joined Pipe Fitters Local 597 in Chicago and worked in commercial heating and cooling. After retirement, he moved to Ormond-by-the-Sea, FL where he resided for 20 years until relocating to the Macon area. Byron was a loving husband and father who enjoyed woodworking, boat making, boating, camping, tennis and golf. Raised in the Lutheran Church, he later became a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fort Valley, GA.
Byron is predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert Henry Tate, and sisters Helen Martha Nugent and Lucille Elma Tenini. Survivors include his loving wife and companion of 61 years, Mildred, and his three sons and daughters-in-law: Wesley (Tolly) of Hinsdale IL, Donald (Ruth) of Warner Robins GA and David (Victoria) of Downers Grove, IL. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Brandon Tate of Sycamore IL, Candice Tate of Downers Grove IL, Ellen & Grace Tate of Hinsdale IL and Elizabeth Tate of Warner Robins. He is also the proud great-grandfather of Tyler and Bryce Tate of Sycamore IL.
Services will be 10 AM Monday 10/24/11 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with Rev. Martin Bagay officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday 10/26/11 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington IN, The Rev. Dr. Donald S. Tate officiating. Rooks Funeral Home, Fort Valley GA and Shelby Funeral Home, Covington IN are in charge of the arrangements.
